Provide a series of techniques for participation and social appropriation of the physical environment that, under the umbrella of “tactical urbanism”, serve as support/motivation to carry out specific interventions in the neighbourhoods.
- Methodology:
-
The process begins with the identification of external actors (social, commercial and institutional) to carry out a collaborative workshop in which the parties are heard, agreements are made, alliances between actors are formed and common agendas are defined.
The techniques used include diagnosis of territorial synthesis (SWOT analysis), brainstorming and the game of grouping by sets.
Among the most noteworthy interventions of tactical urbanism are: artistic public furniture; texts and images on poles, walls or floors; complementary signage in pedestrian or play areas; and murals that embellish the public space (especially degraded spaces).
- Opportunities and limitations:
-
It encourages active listening and collaboration between actors who are present or involved in the neighbourhood.
It requires time and great capacity to reach agreements and consensus between parties with potentially conflicting visions or interests.
Tactical urban planning interventions are generally immediate and inexpensive.
They can help to evaluate the functionality of an action and the community’s perceptions of it to then make it permanent.
- Indicators:
-
Number of people passing through the area (day/night). Area (m2) or distance (linear m) from the study/intervention area. Presence of bike lanes. Number of public seats/benches to sit on. Number of motor vehicles passing through the area (day/night). Fear when crossing the street due to high traffic.
