Good agricultural practices manual for Priorat strategic crops
The agricultural sector is one of the most vulnerable to climate change and the one that most significantly suffers the consequences of extreme meteorological phenomena, temperature increase and the reduction of water availability. In turn, agriculture is responsible for nearly 20% of greenhouse gas emissions. In view of this situation, it is more necessary than ever to commit to agricultural practices which contribute to mitigate climate change and which, at the same time, favour the adaptation of crops to their effects.
In recent years two studies on the impact of climate change in priority crops of Priorat have been carried out, as well as a strategic analysis of potential impacts and its suitability for the various future scenarios that arise at the climate level. In April 2023 Manual de bones pràctiques agràries per mitigar la incidència del canvi climàtic a diversos cultius estratègics del Priorat (Manual of Good Practices to Mitigate the Impact of Climate Change in Different Priorat Strategic Crops) was presented in the region.
This action seeks to be the ideal complement to put into practice and facilitate knowledge transfer towards the agricultural sector of the region of the good practices to be implemented for the adaptation of crops to climate change included in the manual. The title of the manual refers to mitigation, but the meaning it conveys is the mitigation of the effects of climate change on crops, that is, increasing their resilience and resistance.
Agricultural improvements to promote biodiversity and agroforestry mosaic
Advice will be tailored according to the needs of the properties and the crops, but in general the essential topics in which to advise and influence are: fertility and soil water retention, plant needs and water stress management, irrigation efficiency and planification.
It is expected to involve different Priorat agricultural cooperatives and have access to their facilities and properties in order to carry out different technical sections, and put into practice in situ different techniques and management methods.
At environmental level, implementing agricultural improvements may represent, in some cases, not losing product diversification and maintaining activity in the region. And in other cases, improving the environmental impact that some activities may have. Two key aspects that influence the conservation and improvement of biodiversity and agricultural mosaic and contribute to the prevention of forest fires and ecosystem services of agroforestry mosaic.
