Valuation of forestry resources in order to favour reforestation

Segrià Sec has two protected natural areas of great value that currently do not enjoy optimal conditions for care and conservation. In addition, there is a large agricultural area that generates significant waste from pruning trees that are not used. For all that, specific initiatives must be found of valuation of the forestry resource, proactively supporting potential initiatives in order to contribute to the main challenge of this territory: reforestation.

Biochar, a technology recognised by IPCC

One of these solutions is biochar, a product resulting from subjecting biomass to high temperatures in an environment with no low oxygen content. It is a structure with a high organic carbon content, highly porous, light and stable. A 100 % natural product, produced from biomass waste and under strict sustainability criteria. It is, unlike other alternatives such as peat, a renewable and local product.

Versatility of the action thanks to the mobile kiln

The pilot test will consist of evaluating the viability of implementing a management and forest utilisation mechanism, and will be accompanied by the purchase of a mobile kiln to adapt to the needs of the region. The initiative has the support of various public and private agents and entities in the region, such as Torrebesses Town Council.
