Financial Advisory Board established to boost investment in climate adaptation

Coordinated by the Catalan Office for Climate Change (OCCC), the FAB was created to connect financial expertise, public policies and territorial needs in order to facilitate access to financial instruments that can support adaptation measures in sectors most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

The new body includes representatives from several departments of the Government of Catalonia, the four Catalan provincial councils, ACCIÓ, the Catalan Institute of Finance (ICF), the Catalan Water Agency (ACA), ARÇ Insurance, ARCA and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, among others. It also brings together organisations from the private sector and the ethical and sustainable finance community, including Fiare Banca Ética, TRIODOS Bank and Coop57.

The FAB is designed as a permanent collaboration forum bringing together public authorities, financial institutions, the insurance sector, sustainable finance experts and other relevant stakeholders. Its main objectives include fostering synergies among different actors, facilitating access to funding for climate adaptation projects, sharing opportunities and available resources, providing expert insight into existing barriers, and promoting a strategic and cross-sectoral understanding of territorial needs.

The Board will also help identify innovative ways to mobilise public and private investment and to take advantage of opportunities offered by funding programmes, insurance instruments and other emerging mechanisms. Investment in adaptation reduces vulnerabilities, avoids future costs associated with climate impacts, and strengthens both the resilience and competitiveness of local economic activity.
