The Provincial Council of Lleida launches a pioneering action to assess forest adaptation to climate change in Guixers, Solsonès
As part of the European project Life eCOadapt50, the Provincial Council of Lleida has initiated a demonstrative forest management action in the Valls Forest (CUP 98) in Guixers (Solsonès). The main goal is to increase and assess the resilience of the forest ecosystem to climate change impacts such as droughts and heatwaves.

This action, previously approved by the Central Catalonia Living Lab in 2024, is currently awaiting final authorization from the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda (DARP).

Silviculture for Greater Resilience and Adaptation
The intervention focuses on the Bosoms stream area, applying high-precision silviculture to transform the forest structure, currently dominated by Scots pine.

Ecological Objective: To promote a more diverse and resilient forest stand, with a balanced mix of broadleaf and coniferous species. This diversification aims to improve adaptation to new temperature and precipitation regimes.

Practical Management: A selective extraction of 30% of the Basal Area will be carried out, prioritizing the removal of diseased or less adapted trees.

Scientific Evaluation: A key aspect of the project is the rigorous comparison between the managed pilot catchment (32 ha) and a control catchment (30 ha), to measure the direct impact of forest management on resilience and adaptation.

With this initiative, Life eCOadapt50 reinforces the role of the Provincial Council of Lleida as a driver of demonstrative strategies for adaptive land management in Catalonia.
