Meeting with socio-economic stakeholders in L’Estartit moves forward in defining territorial and sectoral climate adaptation strategies
Coinciding with World Fisheries Day, on Thursday, November 21, the L’Estartit Sailing School successfully hosted the first joint meeting of socio-economic stakeholders involved in the Life eCOadapt50 project. The event was hosted by GALP Costa Brava and brought together around fifty participants from the various territorial Living Labs involved in the project.

Organized by IU-Rescat of the Rovira i Virgili University and the Climate Change Centre, with support from GALP Costa Brava and the Barcelona Provincial Council, the event marked a step forward in the shared effort toward climate adaptation. It also served as a valuable space for exchanging experiences in the forestry, agri-livestock, tourism, and fisheries sectors, and opened the door to new inter-territorial collaborations.

Throughout the day, participants attended sector-specific sessions to learn about various actions being implemented within Life eCOadapt50 and other climate adaptation projects across Catalonia.

Co-creation workshops were also held, emphasizing the need for all territories to advance in formulating territorial and sectoral adaptation strategies, defining clear lines of action with specific objectives tailored to the climate vulnerabilities of each area. This structured and coordinated approach is essential for prioritizing actions to address climate challenges effectively.

The fisheries sector took center stage, with a wide range of presentations and activities. Professor Bernat Hereu from the University of Barcelona shared scientific data and reflections on the future of the sea. Joan Massaguer, Head of the Fishermen’s Guild of L’Estartit, spoke about his deep commitment to fishing. Cristina Mañas, Manager of the Palamós Fishermen’s Guild, and Judit Pagès, technician at GALP Costa Brava, presented a water audit process for fishing guilds and a project involving the installation of a portable desalination unit on fishing vessels.

In the afternoon, GALP Costa Brava led a guided tour showcasing various sector initiatives, including the new Espai Medes facility, the acquisition of a sea temperature sensor, a study on filamentous algae, and a neoprene recycling initiative. The visit featured contributions from Antoni Roviras, Director of the Documentation Centers of the Medes Islands Protected Natural Area; Josep Pascual, meteorological observer; and Míriam Prat, President of the Association of Diving Centers on the Costa Brava.
