Life eCOadapt50 discusses sustainable, responsible and regenerative tourism at the first Horizon eCOadapt50 conference
The Santuari del Miracle hosted the first session of the “Horizon eCOadapt50” conference series on Thursday, May 28, under the title Sustainable, responsible and regenerative tourism in a context of climate emergency, organised by the University Institute on Sustainability, Climate Change and Energy Transition (IU-RESCAT). It is a space for reflection, exchange and learning among public administrations, experts and local stakeholders.

The event, attended by around eighty participants, focused the debate on sustainable, responsible and regenerative tourism in a context of climate emergency, with special attention to low-density areas. Regenerative tourism seeks to generate positive impacts in territories by improving environmental, social and economic conditions.

Forward-looking debate: the future of tourism

The day began with an institutional welcome from Núria Parpal, project director at the Barcelona Provincial Council, and Jordi Vilalta, manager of the Central Catalonia Leader Consortium. This was followed by the forward-looking debate Horizons and challenges of tourism in the face of the climate emergency, featuring Estela Mariné and Daniel Paül, professors at the University of Lleida; Eva Vilaseca, spokesperson for the Catalan Assembly for Ecosocial Transition; Òscar Saladié, professor at Rovira i Virgili University; and Inmaculada Díaz-Soria, professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, moderated by Raül Valls, technical coordinator of Alba Sud.

Spaces to share experiences and solutions

The day then included different sessions to analyse the challenges of tourism in the face of climate change and to present initiatives promoting more sustainable and resilient models. In the first session of inspiring experiences, projects such as Regenera4MED were presented by Laila Vivas from the Catalan Tourism Agency, along with a proposal on regenerative tourism and the enhancement of water heritage, presented by Herminia Andreu from the Hydroscopia network.

Sustainable management of mobility and tourist flows in protected natural areas under adverse weather conditions was also addressed by Víctor Dorado from EcoData. Núria Canal from Gratitud Pallars presented a model of conscious tourism linked to territorial regeneration, and Vanesa Mas from the Barcelona Provincial Council shared the public-private collaboration experience of the Barcelona Sustainable Destination programme.

In the afternoon, the second session continued exploring these models, including a presentation on sustainable coastal and marine tourism by Giulia Balestracci from EcoUnion, as well as the Territori de Masies initiative, focused on coordinating and promoting farming and culture in southern Solsonès, presented by Marta Closa. The day concluded with final remarks by Raül Valls.

The event ended with a visit to the winery at the Santuari del Miracle, offering first-hand insight into examples of economic resilience, high-quality agri-food production and the links between tourism, landscape and food sovereignty. Check the presentations in the Conference documentation website.
