Prioritising biodiversity to adapt forest masses to climate change

The adaptation of forest masses to climate change and the preservation and improvement of biodiversity requires the implementation of forest management models of forest masses with a primary conservation objective, seeking to mature structures rather than maintaining shorter felling cycles to maximise timber and/or firewood production.

In this context, the works planned in this action are carried out in accordance with the objectives, zoning and criteria  set out in the management plan for  Muntanya del Matagalls (A. Sanitjas, 2018). The document establishes a series of management guidelines based on the overall objective of adapting forest areas to climate change and conserving and improving diversity.

The proposal corresponds to the execution of the following works:

  • Thinning of future trees, selection of 450 target stipes per hectare and removal of competitors, in stand 2b. The selection of tree stipes will be based on criteria such as diversification of species other than beech, types of trees of interest for biodiversity (microhabitats) and balanced structure.
  • Work to diversify habitats, with the creation, maintenance and expansion of clearings, through the selection of points and trees of interest (diversification of species and microhabitats) in stands 2b and 2c. Treatment of selected trees by felling, ringing of different types of trees and simulation of small disturbances.
