The use of GPS collars in extensive livestock farming – “Nofence” virtual fencing – is one of the adaptation actions being implemented to address key risks in the livestock sector. It aims to promote extensive grazing by improving pasture management and enhancing the socio-economic viability of farms.
Advisory services for farmers
Unió de Pagesos has launched an advisory campaign to inform farmers about the benefits of using this technology in extensive livestock operations. In a circular sent to its members, the union explains that free advisory services are available for the use of these collars.
GPS collars are revolutionizing livestock management, improving both efficiency and economic viability. Through the Projecta’t program, farmers are informed about the different models available in Catalonia. Comparative analysis helps choose the best collar based on animal type, area coverage, required features, and cost. Farmers are also reminded that they may be eligible—before the end of the year—for the Digital Kit grant, which subsidizes up to €3,000 for the purchase of some of these collars.
