High vulnerability of forest areas in northeastern Catalonia
The decline in agricultural, livestock and forestry activity in the mid-mountain region of northeastern Catalonia has led to significant forestation which, together with a lack of innovative forest planning and management at the regional level, translates into high vulnerability of these important naturals spaces, both due to impacts resulting from droughts or risk of forest fire. At the same time, these risks can compromise the conservation of many ecosystem services that these spaces provide, such as water generation, climate regulation and biodiversity conservation, among others.
In this context, it is essential to lay the foundations of knowledge of the territory which will enable the approach and deployment, subsequently, of adaptation strategies to the agroforest space geographical scope of action.
Diagnosis of ecosystem services of agroforestry spaces
The objective of this action focuses on making a detailed diagnosis of the change of these services over time that allows, in the short and mid-term, for the definition of priorities in the planning and management.
To do so, it is planned to quantify the changes that have occurred in land use and land cover in the basin, identify the impacts caused by natural risks such as drought or forest fire in the agroforestry space, identify present and future vulnerabilities and the changes that these risks and vulnerabilities have posed to the ecosystem services they offer.
Specifically, the following will be evaluated in this work:
- Provision services
- Adjustment services
- Biodiversity services
- Cultural services

The innovating and advanced nature of the proposed action is backed by the sound experience of CREAF in the field of analysis, monitoring and modelling of many indicators linked to ecosystem services in the Catalan agroforestry sector.
