Improving the efficiency in the use of water in the fishing sector

The Special Action Plan for Alert and Possible Drought (PES), approved by the Government of Catalonia on 8 January 2020, establishes that entities that hold water rights for uses other than supplying the population must reduce their consumption by a percentage established in the PES, depending on the state of drought declared at any given time.

In the case of Fishermen's Guilds, as entities that consume water for their activities, it is necessary to have a document that analyses their consumption and proposes efficient management. In this context, the proposed action focuses on conducting a water audit of the different guilds included in the scope of the GALP Costa Brava.

Water saving and users’ awareness

The action is highly innovative, as there have been no studies to date focused on improving water management in the fishing sector in the Costa Brava region. It is expected to have a significant environmental impact in terms of water saving and, indirectly, food supply. It is also hoped that raising awareness will make fishing guilds more responsible in their water management and encourage initiatives to use water more efficiently, so that mains water can be prioritised for other uses.

The action is structured in 5 stages:

  1. Information gathering and site visits: report on water cycles, consumption and measures implemented
  2. Analysis of results and proposed strategies: report with results and proposed actions (calendar and budget).
  3. Prioritisation and quantification: report with order of priorities
  4. Implementation of solutions: file and photo of each action with expected water saving.
  5. Report of results, communication and follow-up.
